About the position We are looking for a skilled Embedded Software Engineer to join our IoT Department. You will work within the Embedded Software Engineers team, and close to the IoT Architect and the Product Owner to design and implement software for IoT devices and systems, from requirements to production and commercial deployment. You will participate in the development of the IoT data acquisition systems of DeepSea, develop and test system software, analyze and enhance their efficiency, stability and scalability, support software QA and optimize performance. Our hardware platform is an IoT cloud and IoT sensor swarm which uses state-of-the-art IoT stack for gathering and preprocessing measurements. It handles all standard and custom marine/industrial protocols and performs edge computing by applying noise removal filters, calculating metadata, compressing and encrypting transmittable measurements, and is installed onboard vessels all over the world. Our software products are used by shipping company engineers and captains to optimize the technical operations and navigation of their vessels based on our in-house developed AI and optimisation algorithms. You will need to gain a good understanding of the vision and underlying technology behind our products and the needs that they satisfy.

Main responsibilities:

• Design, develop and maintain embedded software for DeepSea's IoT data acquisition systems and onboard edge devices, in C/C++ and Python, on embedded Linux and microcontroller platforms.

• Develop and maintain our Yocto-based embedded Linux distribution (BSP, custom layers and recipes, kernel configuration, device drivers) for ARM-based hardware.

• Work in an AI-driven manner in all stages of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), including analysis, planning, development, code review and testing to maximize productivity and precision engineering. • Implement and integrate marine and industrial communication protocols (NMEA 0183/2000, IEC 61162-450, Modbus RTU/TCP, RS-232/RS-485, CAN) and wireless IoT links (LoRaWAN, ZigBee, BLE, Wi-Fi, LTE).

• Build and optimize the edge data pipeline: acquisition, filtering, metadata calculation, compression, encryption and reliable store-and-forward transmission to the cloud over constrained, intermittent vessel connectivity.

• Develop and maintain secure OTA update, device provisioning and remote management mechanisms (e.g. Mender) for a fleet of devices installed on vessels worldwide.

• Apply secure-by-design practices (secure boot, system hardening, access control, vulnerability management) in support of maritime cyber security requirements (IACS UR E26/E27) and class type approval (DNV, ClassNK).

• Collaborate with the IoT Architect, the Product Owner and the hardware and customer operations teams to translate requirements into robust solutions, from prototype to production and commercial deployment.

• Write unit, integration and hardware-in-the-loop tests, participate in code reviews, and support QA, lab validation and field troubleshooting, including remote diagnostics of onboard units.

• Profile and optimize performance, memory footprint, power consumption and long-term stability of devices running 24/7 in harsh marine environments.

• Produce clear technical documentation (design, interface and protocol specifications, test reports), including documentation required for class certification.

Main requirements:

• BSc / MSc degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering, Embedded Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.

• 5+ years of professional experience in embedded software development.

• Strong programming skills in C/C++ for embedded Linux and microcontroller (bare-metal or RTOS) targets.

• Solid experience with Python and Bash for tooling, automation, testing and on-device services.

• Hands-on experience with Yocto Project / OpenEmbedded (layers, recipes, BSPs) and cross-compilation toolchains.

• Ability to work in an AI-driven manner in all stages of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), including analysis, planning, development, code review and testing, to maximize productivity and precision engineering.

• Good understanding of Linux internals: kernel, device drivers, device tree, systemd, networking.

• Experience with serial and fieldbus interfaces and industrial/automation protocols (UART, RS-485, I2C, SPI, CAN, Modbus, NMEA).

• Ability to read schematics and component datasheets and to use lab equipment (oscilloscope, logic analyzer) for board bring-up and debugging.

• Familiarity with agentic development workflows: working with AI coding agents to plan, implement, test and review code, while keeping strong engineering oversight of the output.

• Proficient with Git-based workflows, build/release processes and CI/CD pipelines.

• Familiarity with test-driven development and the QA process of software development.

• Strong analytical, debugging and problem-solving skills.

• Excellent communication skills in English.

Nice to have:

• Knowledge of maritime standards and type approval (IEC 61162-1/-450, IEC 60945, IACS UR E26/E27, DNV class rules).

• Experience with IoT wireless protocols (LoRaWAN, ZigBee, BLE) and cellular or satellite connectivity.

• Experience with OTA update frameworks (Mender, SWUpdate, RAUC) and device fleet management.

• Embedded security experience: secure boot, TPM/secure elements, TLS/PKI, hardening, SBOM and vulnerability management (e.g. EU Cyber Resilience Act).

• RTOS experience (FreeRTOS, Zephyr) and low-power MCU development (e.g. STM32, ESP32, nRF).

• Edge AI: deploying ML inference on resource-constrained devices (e.g. LiteRT/TensorFlow Lite, ONNX Runtime).

• Experience with IoT messaging and time-series databases (MQTT, InfluxDB).

• Experience with Docker/containers on embedded targets and AWS IoT services.

• Familiarity with Atlassian tools (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket).

• Ability to explain technical issues clearly to non-technical stakeholders (customers, crews, class surveyors).
